POSITION GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Detention Healthcare Technician (DHT) job duties include providing medical care to detained youth in the Ada County Juvenile Services Detention Center.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The incumbent works under the direction of the contracted providers and under the supervision of the Registered Nurse Supervisor. Incumbents work three 12-hour shifts and one four-hour shift each week, rotating every two weeks with every other weekend off.

  • Provides subacute and acute care to youth in detention along with technical, clinical, and clerical support as needed;
  • Daily use of electronic medical records;
  • Performs medication administration, CLIA laboratory testing, medical procedures, and treatments ordered by the medical providers;
  • Provides clinical triage and communication as defined by protocol or per provider instructions, including but not limited to communicating with parents/guardians, other medical providers, case workers, probation, and staff as needed;
  • Assists in examination and treatment of youth authorized by the contracted medical providers and under the Supervision of a Registered Nurse, to include preparing and cleaning exam rooms;
  • Observes the physical condition and behavior of youth to ensure health care is provided to community standards;
  • Follows standard infection control precautions and transmission-based precaution protocols as defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention;
  • Coordinates special medical needs to Detention staff and outside facilities;
  • Provides education on health-related issues;
  • Performs phlebotomy with proper collection, labeling, processing, and packaging of specimens for laboratory testing;
  • Documents laboratory test results accurately in youth medical record;
  • Accurately documents encounters and interventions performed;
  • Maintains HIPAA confidentiality regarding youth and their care;
  • Operates within the scope of practice under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains current inventory of supplies;
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Graduate of a medical assisting program at an authorized school accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP), the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools, or like agency, and have passed the Medical Assistant Certification exam and maintain a current, valid certification; or
  • Certified as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) and licensure through IGEM and maintain a current, valid certification through employment; or
  • Successful completion of a Medical Proficiency Training Program as conducted by any branch of the United States Military. The course should be no less than 320 hours of classroom and practical instruction in the direct provision of primary care such that persons completing the course are able to function at the independent medic/corpsman level;
  • Must maintain current Basic Life Support CPR certification;
  • Must possess a valid Idaho driver’s license;
  • Must have one (1) year experience;
  • Must be detail oriented;
  • Knowledge of medical and nursing principles, medical procedures and practices, and medical equipment and supplies;
  • Knowledge of laws regulating narcotics, medications, patients’ rights of consent, pharmacology, and indications for referral;
  • Knowledge in chronic illnesses, care of the psychiatric patient, trauma and emergency medicine preferred;
  • Working knowledge of basic medical equipment;
  • Ability to perform technical medical skills with a high degree of accuracy;
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and orders;
  • Ability to maintain professional relationships;
  • Ability to apply tact, diplomacy, and de-escalation skills;
  • Ability to observe and understand physical conditions and behavior;
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to individuals and groups;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position requires shift work (three 12-hour shifts and one four-hour shift each week, rotating every two weeks with every other weekend off);
  • This position requires incumbent to be FIT tested for respirators; including N-95 and KN-95;
  • Must maintain professional boundaries, apply tact, diplomacy, and de-escalation skills appropriately;
  • This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing.
  • Work is performed in and around a juvenile detention facility and the incumbent in this class is subject to inside environmental conditions;
  • May be required to lift up to 20 lbs.;
  • Requires sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the incumbent to safely function in a general medical and office environment to accomplish tasks.

What you’ll be doing:

You are responsible for oversight of the planning, scheduling, and executing your assigned project.
