CALDWELL — Eastbound drivers on Interstate 84 in Caldwell are due to move onto permanent new lanes. The Idaho Transportation Department scheduled the shift onto the new eastbound lanes between Centennial Way and Franklin Road for the night of Friday, Oct. 9, including the new side of the 10th Avenue Interchange bridge, according to an ITD release (Oct. 5, 2026). Three eastbound ramps were set to close from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday to make the switch. As of Oct. 13, ITD had not posted a follow-up confirming the shift was complete; check 511.idaho.gov for current conditions.
“The shift marks a major step toward finishing the project,” Resident Engineer Styles Salek said. “Crews have been building the 10th Avenue Interchange bridge since 2023. Now, motorists will get to drive on it.” Westbound drivers made a similar move onto new lanes in June 2024.
What the Caldwell project adds
The project started in November 2023 and is expected to finish by summer 2027. ITD lists:
• Widening I-84 to three lanes each way, with auxiliary lanes between interchanges
• Replacing the 10th Avenue Interchange
• Removing one westbound on-ramp at 10th Avenue
• Updating the pedestrian overpass
• A sound wall along Hannibal Street
• A new traffic signal at the westbound ramps at Centennial Way
Heads up: I-84 closes overnight Oct. 15 in Nampa
A few exits east, all lanes of I-84 will close between Garrity Boulevard (Exit 38) and Ten Mile Road (Exit 42) from 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, to 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16, so crews can place bridge decks on flyover ramps for the State Highway 16 extension, Idaho News and ITD report. Traffic will detour to Franklin Road.
When finished, SH-16 will be a limited-access highway between SH-44 and I-84 with interchanges at I-84, Franklin Road, Ustick Road, US-20/26 and SH-44. ITD says the full corridor is on track to open in 2027.
