In a move to provide financial relief to families across the state, Governor Brad Little officially signed House Bill 231 into law, increasing the grocery tax credit for Idaho families to $155 per year.
“With the cost of just about everything, including food, continuing to rise, it’s becoming increasingly challenging for Idaho families to save money or prioritize other household needs,” Governor Little stated during the signing ceremony. “I love the signal we send to Idaho families every year when we deliver even more tax relief while taking care of the needs of a growing state. As we continue to provide historical tax relief, we must ensure our budget balances as the Idaho Constitution requires.”
The bill garnered broad support in the Idaho Legislature, with key leaders emphasizing the importance of relieving the financial burden on the most basic necessities—food. House Speaker Mike Moyle voiced his commitment to tax relief, saying, “Giving back the people’s money will always top the list of our priorities in the Idaho Legislature. Providing even more relief on the most basic of needs – food – is just the right thing to do. I appreciate my fellow legislators and Governor Little for continuing to strengthen our state through additional tax relief.”
Senate Pro Tem Kelly Anthon echoed this sentiment, highlighting the considerable tax relief measures already implemented in recent years. “We have heard from Idahoans loud and clear that they need relief on the cost of groceries, and the Idaho Legislature answered the call. The State of Idaho has turned back $4.6 billion in tax cuts in recent years through relief on property taxes, grocery taxes, income taxes, and taxes on businesses. With this year’s historic tax cuts, that number will only increase. The Idaho Legislature is proud to prioritize tax cuts for hardworking Idaho families.”
Under the updated legislation, eligible Idaho residents can expect to see their grocery tax credits increase from $120 to $155 per year, effective immediately. The bill allows residents to opt for a refund based on the actual sales tax paid on qualifying food purchases, up to a maximum of $250 per person.
This initiative comes at a crucial time for many families facing the rising costs of living. Local advocacy groups have praised the passage of House Bill 231, telling reporters that it marks a significant step towards easing food insecurity and making groceries more affordable.
Idaho residents are encouraged to stay informed about the new grocery tax credit and how they can take advantage of these benefits when filing their taxes. The Idaho State Tax Commission will provide updated guidelines and resources to assist taxpayers in navigating the changes.
