NAMPA — The Robinson Road railroad overpass in Nampa just landed the biggest transportation grant in the city's history. On Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, the City of Nampa announced it was selected for up to $42.98 million in federal funding for the Robinson Road and Greenhurst Road Railroad Overpass Project, which would lift Robinson Road over the Union Pacific tracks near Greenhurst Road in south Nampa.

What the Robinson Road overpass will change

Right now, drivers on Robinson Road cross the railroad at grade, and the city says trains frequently block that crossing, delaying motorists and creating potential challenges for emergency response. The roughly $53.7 million project will eliminate the at-grade crossing by building a grade-separated crossing, so vehicles can travel over the tracks without waiting on passing trains.

A project plan sheet shared by the city shows the new bridge carrying Robinson Road over the tracks, with roundabouts connecting Greenhurst Road to Robinson Road near the new bridge.

Why Nampa needs it now

Traffic on Robinson Road between Cruse Lane and Greenhurst Road is expected to triple by 2050, from 5,500 vehicles per day to 16,200 vehicles per day, according to the city.

"This is great news for Nampa," Mayor Darl Bruner said in the city's announcement, as reported by BoiseDev. "The federal grant of up to $42.98 million for the Robinson Road and Greenhurst Road rail crossing project will help us eliminate a dangerous crossing that is often blocked by trains and make travel safer and smoother for everyone."

"This is an important investment in Nampa's transportation infrastructure and the safety of our community," city Transportation Director Crystal Craig said, according to KTVB.

Where the money comes from

The award is part of the Federal Railroad Administration's $1.24 billion round of rail safety grants, which includes 91 grants across 37 states through the Fiscal Year 2025-26 Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program, the Idaho Press reported. The federal money will cover final design, right-of-way acquisition and construction.

The City of Nampa and Nampa Highway District No. 1 will provide a 20% non-federal funding match. This is the second major federal transportation grant Nampa has secured this year, after a $23 million award in July for improvements along the Northside Corridor, from 4th Street North south to the intersection of 12th Avenue South and 7th Street South.

Construction timeline

Construction on the Robinson Road overpass is expected to start in early 2030 and take up to three years. The city says it will share more about the design, the construction schedule and chances for public input as the project moves forward.
