Palisades Wildfire: 1,000 Structures Lost and Flames Consume 12,000 Acres in Southern California

LOS ANGELES – The worst fears have come to fruition in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, where a devastating wildfire, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, has resulted in the destruction of approximately 1,000 structures, predominantly homes, as confirmed by officials on Wednesday morning.

The Palisades Fire was first reported around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday in the 1100 block of North Piedra Morada Drive. By Wednesday afternoon, the fire had expanded dramatically to nearly 12,000 acres with no containment in sight.

During a news conference on Wednesday morning, L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone stated that around 1,000 structures have been lost. He also reported a significant number of individuals who failed to evacuate suffered serious injuries.

As the Palisades Fire wreaks havoc on the neighborhood amid intense winds, firefighters have been engaged in a desperate battle to control the flames. Various images depict the tremendous scale of the fire, with flames encroaching on properties and aerial efforts to douse the fire with water.

With daylight revealing the full extent of the damage, entire neighborhoods and commercial districts have been laid to waste in this affluent coastal area.

Evacuations have been mandated for the entire Pacific Palisades region down to the ocean, affecting tens of thousands of homes and businesses. Residents of Santa Monica and Calabasas have also received evacuation warnings.

A shelter for evacuees and their pets has been set up at the Westwood Recreation Center located at 1350 S. Sepulveda Blvd.

In light of the emergency, both the Santa Monica and Las Virgenes unified school districts have canceled classes, with numerous schools across Los Angeles County, including several within the Los Angeles Unified School District, being closed on Wednesday.

The cause of the Palisades Fire is currently under investigation.

Pacific Palisades is situated about 10 miles from Malibu, where the Franklin Fire previously burned over 4,000 acres and destroyed several homes during similar windy conditions in December.
