The Idaho Department of Transportation (ITD) is moving forward with plans to address growing traffic demands in South-Central Idaho and is turning to residents for their opinions. The centerpiece of this effort is a proposed new bridge spanning the Snake River, a major infrastructure project aimed at future-proofing the region’s transportation network.
This initiative, which has been under consideration since 2022, is a direct response to a population surge of nearly 40% over the past two decades. This growth has placed significant strain on existing infrastructure, particularly the Perrine Bridge in Twin Falls, leading to frequent congestion and safety concerns.
With forecasts predicting an additional 37,000+ new residents by 2050, the need for a solution is pressing. ITD states that a new crossing would serve multiple critical functions: improving daily commute flows, boosting safety in a high-accident corridor, offering an alternative route to ease pressure on U.S. Highway 93, and creating essential redundancy within the local roadway system.
Four primary route options have been shortlisted for the project. Two potential paths would originate near Jerome, requiring a bridge roughly 1,400 feet long to cross the river west of Twin Falls. The other two alternatives are situated closer to the heart of the Magic Valley, near Twin Falls, and would necessitate longer bridges of approximately 1,500 feet. The department is also evaluating a variety of architectural designs, from sleek cable-stayed and suspension bridges to more utilitarian rigid frame and box girder structures.

This proposed river crossing is one part of a broader strategy to enhance mobility in the area. Other key projects include significant improvements to the intersection of Blue Lakes Boulevard and Pole Line Road, as well as plans to either widen or completely replace the aging Hansen Bridge.
The public feedback gathered will be instrumental in refining the project’s scope and design. Following this input phase, ITD will commence a detailed environmental impact study, a process expected to extend into 2028. Securing federal funding will be a crucial next step before any construction can begin.
ITD has also noted that an alternative to building an entirely new bridge is being evaluated: widening the existing Ken Curtis Bridge on State Highway 46. This option will be studied further to determine if it can adequately meet the identified travel demands for the region.
