Hayden sits on the west shore of Hayden Lake in Kootenai County, a few miles north of Coeur d’Alene on U.S. Highway 95. The city was incorporated on June 27, 1955, after the business cluster along Government Way grew apart from the older lakeshore settlement that became Hayden Lake. City Hall describes a community of locally owned shops downtown and public lake access at Honeysuckle Beach, a city-owned park with a swim area. Hayden Lake has public boat launches and is used for fishing, swimming, and boating. In town, Triple Play Family Fun Park and Raptor Reef Water Park sit along Orchard Avenue. Silverwood Theme Park is about a 20-minute drive north on Highway 95, and ski areas including Schweitzer, Silver Mountain, Lookout Pass, and Mt. Spokane are within about an hour and a half.
