Payette is the county seat of Payette County, at the confluence of the Payette and Snake rivers on the Oregon border. The town began as the Oregon Short Line construction camp called Boomerang, then incorporated in 1891 and took the name of fur trapper Francois Payette. U.S. Highway 95 and State Highway 52 meet here. The city reports more than 51 acres of parkland, nine developed parks, and about a half mile of greenway trail, plus the Snake River at Centennial Park and the North End Marina. Payette is home to Harmon Killebrew Miracle Field, described by the city as the first of its kind in Idaho, and Scotch Pines Golf Course. Downtown still has early 20th century commercial blocks, including the N. A. Jacobsen building, the historic city hall and courthouse, and the Portia Club.
