Idaho added housing faster than any other state in 2025.

Census housing-unit estimates put Idaho up 2.1% last year, more than 17,000 new units, the fastest rate in the country for the second year in a row. Since 2020 the state has finished first or second every year.

From 2020 to 2025 Idaho grew its housing count 12.3% and completed more than 93,000 units. That is second nationally behind Utah (12.9%) and ahead of Texas (10.4%), and more than double the U.S. rate of 5.3%. Five Idaho counties — Teton, Canyon, Ada, Bonneville, and Kootenai — each added more than 14% over those five years.

Ada County added 5,026 units in 2025, the most of any Idaho county. Teton (5%), Bonneville (4.4%), and Canyon (3.7%) had the fastest rates. Ada, Canyon, Kootenai, and Bonneville together added 12,300 units, 71% of the statewide total.

For people moving to Idaho, the inventory is still catching the people: most of the new homes landed in those four urban counties, and no county in the state lost units in any of the last five years.
