Eagle Fire Breaks Ground on Joint Hwy 55 Station With Federal Wildland Crews

Eagle, Idaho

Eagle is getting a new shared fire station on the Highway 55 corridor.

Eagle Fire and U.S. Wildland Fire Service crews broke ground Thursday morning, Sept. 3, 2026, on a joint station off Highway 55 and Beacon Light Road. State and local officials, community members, and fire leaders turned out for the ceremony. The partnership has been about five years in the making.

Eagle Fire Chief Lewis said this is the first station of its kind with the U.S. Wildland Fire Service that local leaders know of. The site sits on Beacon Light Road, named for an old aircraft beacon that once guided pilots out of the Boise area. Lewis said the district hopes the station becomes that kind of landmark for neighbors who need help day or night.

The project relocates Eagle Fire Station 2 from Old Horseshoe Bend Road, a 1996 building that ended up on the edge of the district as annexations changed the map. Growth also left the old site short on room for dozers, brush trucks, and other gear. For federal wildland crews, the new home base replaces a facility they lost years ago. Unit One Chief Marty Adell said resources answering foothills fires have been coming from near the Boise Airport, a drive that can take 45 minutes to nearly an hour, and longer with heavy equipment.

Adell said grasses and brush in the area light fast and spread fast, so every minute matters. Putting engines and dozers at Highway 55 and Beacon Light cuts that travel time for calls toward Avimor, Emmett, and the western side of the district. Eagle Mayor and Fire Commissioner Brad Pike called the local-federal collaboration rare in his decades in the fire service. Governor Brad Little, House Speaker Mike Moyle, and Senator Gro were also credited for supporting fire funding and the partnership.

When it opens, the joint station will bring Eagle Fire to five stations in Eagle, plus the contracted station in Hidden Springs. A sign at the site still points to spring 2027, but Lewis said fall 2027 is the more realistic target. Earlier planning put the shared facility around a $10 million investment, split roughly evenly by square footage between Eagle Fire and federal wildland partners.
