Idaho Ranks No. 2 for Population Growth, Still Fastest Since 2020

Boise, Idaho

Idaho added 28,861 people in 2025. The state grew 1.4%, to 2,029,733 residents, and ranked second in the country for that year's growth rate.

Only South Carolina grew faster, at 1.5%. The figures come from U.S. Census Bureau estimates released through the Idaho Department of Labor on Jan. 30, 2026, covering July 1, 2024 to July 1, 2025.

For anyone watching the Treasure Valley, the bigger frame still matters more than a single year. From the 2020 Census base to July 2025, Idaho grew 10.4% and added 190,610 people. That is the fastest cumulative growth of any state over that stretch. The yearly pace has cooled from the 3% and 2% jumps of 2021 and 2022, but it has held near 1.4% to 1.5% for three years running.

Neighboring states are not keeping up. Utah grew 1%. Nevada and Washington each grew 0.9%. Montana grew 0.6%, Wyoming 0.3%, and Oregon 0.2%. The U.S. average was 0.5%. So even on a cooler year, Idaho still outpaced every state that borders it.

Most of the new people are movers, not newborns. Net migration accounted for 76% of Idaho's 2025 growth, or 22,063 people. Of that migration, 90% came from other U.S. states. Natural change, births minus deaths, made up the other 24%, or about 6,900 people. In plain terms, people are still choosing Idaho, and they are mostly coming from somewhere else in the country.

That pattern fits what movers already feel on the ground. Housing, schools, and commute questions keep stacking up in Ada and Canyon counties because the people arriving are real households, not a statistical blip. A No. 2 national ranking for the year, and a No. 1 ranking since 2020, are two ways of saying the same thing: the inflow has slowed from the peak years, but it has not stopped.

Stay tuned to Treasure Idaho for continued coverage of the numbers behind the move.
