The Boise metro area grew 2.2% in 2025, the fastest pace among Idaho's six metropolitan statistical areas and the 13th-fastest metro growth rate in the United States.
U.S. Census Bureau estimates released through the Idaho Department of Labor put the Boise City MSA at 864,243 residents as of July 1, 2025, up 18,854 from the year before. That gain made Boise the second-fastest growing metro in the western United States, behind only St. George, Utah.
For anyone thinking about moving to Idaho, the metro story matters as much as the statewide headline. Idaho's overall population grew 1.4% in 2025. Boise and Coeur d'Alene both outpaced that rate. Idaho Falls matched it. Twin Falls, Pocatello, and Lewiston also grew, though more slowly. In other words, every official Idaho metro added people last year.
Coeur d'Alene grew 1.8%, to 191,864. Idaho Falls grew 1.4%, to 173,851. Twin Falls reached 123,901 (+0.9%), Pocatello 91,591 (+0.7%), and Lewiston 65,450 (essentially flat at +18 people). Boise, Coeur d'Alene, and Idaho Falls all landed in the national top 50 for one-year metro growth.
Most of that Treasure Valley pressure still lands in Ada and Canyon counties, the core of the Boise MSA. Housing, schools, and commute questions follow the people. A 2.2% metro jump in a year when many U.S. cities shrank is another signal that movers are still choosing southwest Idaho, even after the peak growth years cooled.
Stay tuned to Treasure Idaho for continued coverage of the numbers behind the move.
Quick Facts:
That is unusual by national standards. More than one out of every five metropolitan areas in the U.S. lost population in 2025. Idaho's six MSAs went the other way, adding a combined 26,582 residents and accounting for 92% of the state's total population growth.
