Meta’s first Idaho data center is live in Kuna.
At a ceremony Thursday, Meta flipped the switch on a $1.2 billion campus on about 650 acres in eastern Kuna. The site is now serving traffic for Meta’s platforms and is built around the company’s latest AI hardware. Company and city officials put the building footprint at roughly 750,000 square feet across the campus, with about 17 acres under roof in reporting tied to the ribbon cutting.
Kuna residents worried early about water use when the project broke ground in 2022. Meta paused the build for more than a year to redesign cooling, then restarted in 2023. The two primary data halls now use a closed-loop system that keeps about 200,000 gallons of water in sealed pipes and dry coolers, with little to no evaporative loss for most of the year. Meta says the same water can stay in the loop for an estimated seven to 10 years. A smaller slice of the campus still uses evaporative cooling in rapid-deployment structures.
Operations staff describe data halls kept near 85 degrees to save energy, with thousands of server racks cooled by water loops and banks of fans. One hall alone holds about 1,600 racks. Peak construction employed more than 1,600 skilled-trade workers. The campus now supports more than 75 operations jobs, with hiring expected to climb toward about 100.
Meta says electricity use is matched with 100% clean energy, including support for about 645 megawatts of new renewable capacity in Ada County. The company also reports more than $100 million invested in a dedicated water and wastewater system for Kuna sized with extra capacity for future homes and businesses, plus more than $1.5 million in grants to Ada County schools and nonprofits. At the Thursday event, Meta added a $200,000 grant for the Kuna School District for STEM, workforce prep, and student supports.
Treasure Idaho will keep following major infrastructure and tech projects across the Treasure Valley as Kuna and neighboring cities absorb new jobs and growth.
